Moving to Bend, Oregon From Denver

You already live for the mountains — this is about living in them. The Front Range-to-Bend move, honestly compared.

Colorado transplants are the easiest relocation clients we have: they already own the gear, understand snow tires, and know what altitude does to a sourdough starter. The move is less about discovering mountain life and more about right-sizing it. Here's the honest comparison.

1. The scale trade

Denver is three million people with the Rockies on the horizon; Bend is about 100,000 with the Cascades in your windshield. What you give up is real: a major airport with nonstops everywhere, pro sports, big-city healthcare depth, and a downtown that never runs out of new restaurants. What you get back: skiing 20 minutes away with no I-70 crawl, trails from your front door, a river through downtown you can float after work, and a town where "traffic" means the roundabout backed up eight cars.

2. Mountains, compared

Kyle raced alpine at the Olympic level, so we take this question seriously. Mt. Bachelor is one mountain, not thirty — but it's a massive one, with one of North America's longest seasons and 360-degree volcano descents. Summer is where Bend pulls ahead: high-desert singletrack (Phil's Trail out the back of The Tree Farm side), the Deschutes for paddling and fly water, and alpine lakes 30 minutes out. Front Rangers stop comparing by August.

3. Taxes and money

Colorado's flat income tax plus sales tax becomes Oregon's higher graduated income tax and no sales tax. For most households the shift is modest either way — model it at higher incomes. Housing costs run comparable to Denver's nicer neighborhoods; what changes is what the money buys: setting over square footage, view lots and gated golf over proximity to a light-rail stop.

4. The climate fine print

Similar sunshine story to Denver — around 300 sunny days — with milder cold snaps and less hail. Bend sits at 3,600 feet versus your 5,280, so you'll actually gain lung capacity. Late-summer wildfire smoke visits both places; our honest guide covers how that intersects with buying here.

5. Getting here and buying

Redmond (RDM) is 25 minutes out with connections through the western hubs. The buying process runs remotely between one or two visits — video call, custom neighborhood map, focused scouting trip. Start with our neighborhood guide, then call us; we'll translate your Denver reference points into Bend ones in the first twenty minutes.
